Martus Intelligence - Smarty

Smarty: Sample Questions and What It Knows

Smarty is Martus' AI assistant for your live budget, actuals, and reports it is available at the Premium level and to certain customers in our beta test. Ask it a question in plain language, either through the Smarty chat panel inside Martus or through a connected AI app like Claude or ChatGPT, and it answers using your organization's own data, including charts and visuals when you ask for them.

Step by Step

  1. As an Admin, go to Martus > Support and click OK under Martus Intelligence Consent to allow AI access for your organization.

  2. Optional: Set up the Martus MCP connector to connect Martus to an AI app like Claude or ChatGPT, or to unlock the Smarty chat panel inside Martus.

  3. Open the Smarty chat panel, or your connected AI app, and type your question, or click one of the suggested prompts to get started.

  4. Review the answer, then ask a follow-up question if you need more detail.

Sample Questions

  • "Break down last year's annual revenue by category in a pie chart."

  • "Highlight the three departments with the largest YTD variance."

  • "Which GL accounts are driving the variance in project 100?"

  • "How am I doing with my budget to actuals?"

  • "Which worksheets are still waiting for my approval?"

  • "Is the Sales department's worksheet locked, and is it over or under target?"

  • "What's the current fiscal year, and when does it end?"

Notes on What Smarty Can Do & Access

  • Smarty can build charts and visuals, such as a pie chart of revenue by category, not just raw data tables.

  • Smarty can review budgets and actuals throughout Martus.  Smarty can see worksheet approval state, targets, and whether a worksheet is locked or unlocked.

  • Smarty resolves dates using your real fiscal calendar, including fiscal year boundaries, reporting months, and the default ending month used for year-to-date figures.

  • Smarty can list accounts, account categories, dimensions like Department or Location, budgets, actuals, and worksheets, and pull full approver-level detail, including denial comments, for any worksheet.

  • Smarty reflects the permissions of the person asking. An Admin sees the full chart of accounts and every budget; other users see only what they're permitted to see.

  • Smarty is aware of the Budget Navigator, the timelines within and what tasks are complete or open.

Notes on What Smarty Can't Do

  • Smarty can't edit data or submit changes on your behalf. It answers questions about your live budget, actuals, and reports, but it can't change them.

  • Smarty's standard account list excludes statistical (non-financial) accounts.

  • Smarty only knows about the Martus client you're signed in to or connected as. It can't compare data across separate Martus clients.

FAQs

  • Question: Is Smarty the same as Ask Marty!? Answer: No. Ask Marty! is a chatbot that answers questions about how to use the Martus software, using the Knowledge Base and help files. Smarty answers questions about your organization's own financial data, such as actuals, budgets, and worksheets.

  • Question: Do I need the Martus MCP connector to use Smarty? Answer: No. Smarty's chat panel inside Martus works on its own, without the MCP connector. Setting up the MCP connector adds a second way in: it also lets you ask Smarty from an external AI app like Claude or ChatGPT. So you can use Smarty without the connector, but you can't have the connector without Smarty.

  • Question: Can Smarty create charts? Answer: Yes. For example, you can ask it to break down revenue by category in a pie chart.

  • Question: Can Smarty edit or approve a worksheet for me? Answer: No. Smarty can tell you a worksheet's approval status, targets, and lock state, but it can't submit, approve, deny, or edit anything on your behalf.

  • Question: Will two different users get the same answer to the same question? Answer: Not necessarily. Smarty reflects what the person asking is permitted to see, so an Admin and a non-admin user may get different answers.
